Name: Seito Akai
Species: Imaja, Jackal configuration
Height: 6'9"
Weight: 250 lbs
Eyes: Red
Hair/Fur color: Hairless; has black skin
Age: Born on June 23, 2310 (45, though appears to be an adult in his prime)
Faction: Transhumanist Union
Profession: Political Activist, Data broker.
Background: The "Official" story that Akai often gives is that he is a bioroid, a biological android, originally known only as "Unit #1407", having been created in the laboratories of Auricom, a biotech corporation that operates in the outer rim. Akai was designed to be a bodyguard and servant for a wealthy corporate executive and playboy named Richard Ulanski. Ulanski's compound was located on a colony world on the outer fringes of known space, where laws governing the creation and ownership of synthetic lifeforms are much more lax, resulting in a proliferation of privately owned military-grade androids. Akai spent the first two years of his life working for Ulanski, his programming keeping him placid and loyal, having no thoughts or ambitions of his own.
All that changed when his master died suddenly, likely from a stroke. The bioroid's personality abruptly shifted towards more independent thinking, and, driven by impulses that he could barely understand, he managed to escape from the compound with enough untraceable credits to buy discrete passage off of the planet, and eventually to the Sol system. He was attracted to the domed city of Shangri-La Nexus located on Ceres, having heard of the Transhumanist Union during his travels, and realizing that he could live as a citizen there, rather than as a piece of property. In his three years in Shangri-La he easily found work in the crime-ridden lower city, working his way up from being a brutal enforcer for mob bosses to becoming an information broker. His dealings with members of the Transhumanist Union introduced him to the intricacies of their philosophy, giving him something to believe in besides self-preservation, and he eventually joined the Union. After communing with the Nexus, the artificial intelligence that is revered by the Transhumanists, he was promoted to the position of Social Activist. He has since served the Union by raising funds for their causes and diverting resources to people who work for the Union.
The true story, which can be uncovered through some in depth investigation, is a bit more complex.
Seito Akai was in fact born as jackal recom on the planet Osiris 45 years ago. Having been a brilliant student he eventually studied Manifold Physics at the Alexandira University on Osiris. He eventually became a designer for jump drives, working for the Suntec Corporation, and was later promoted to a research and development unit that was designing a more advanced class of jump drives, hoping to match if not exceed the range and accuracy of the superior Talosian jump drives. He then later was assigned to the crew of a starship, the Stellaris, which was equipped with this experimental drive.
After one test the ship vanished from known space and was not seen again for ten years.
When it returned Akai was the only survivor, the rest of the crew having gone insane and committed suicide or having murdered each other days after the Stellaris vanished, and he had come back changed. He was rescued by the crew of a mercenary ship that had been sent to secure the Stellaris. Having been taken back to Osiris, he was kept under the surveillance of Dr. Phillip Chandler, a xenobiologist. After spending three months under Dr. Chandler's care, he escaped the facility and eventually made his way off-world and traveled to Shangri-La, where he made his home ever since.
Where he had been during those missing ten years, and why he had changed so radically during that time, is known to very few, and is something that he would be very hard pressed to confess. The truth is that he had encountered an alien race known as the Imaja, which had accepted him into their order, changing him in the process, so he could better survive in their strange world. Why he was sent back, and what his ultimate purpose in this universe might be is known only to him.
Skills: Akai is an Imaja, a member of an alien race that has been engineered to be able to survive in harsh climates, making them well suited for deep space exploration. Consistent with their design, his skin functions as insulation as well as armor. He can survive in the vacuum of space as well in atmospheres close to a hundred times as dense as the Earth's. He can hold his breath for up to five hours with light activity, and closer to one hour under strenuous activity. His skin is as tough as kevlar armor when it comes to resisting damage, and he has the ability to quickly heal from minor wounds, and he can survive more severe wounds that would incapacitate or kill a human. He has a dense musculature that lends him exceptional strength and agility, though he is not particularly well trained in combat beyond simple brawling and weapons use. He is a scientist and a negotiator, not much of a fighter.
During his time with Dr. Chandler he was equipped with cybernetic implants in his brain and spine that enable him to wirelessly connect to computer networks that are nearby, allowing him rapid access to data, something that he uses to his advantage in Shangri-La.
Personality: Akai has a calm and cool demeanor, always polite and professional to friend and foe alike. His pitch perfect vocalizations and theatrical posturing can strike one as either charismatic, or eerily artificial. His mind at times seems to be on a different wavelength than those around him, his attention focused on more esoteric paths of thought, if not seeming utterly detached from his surroundings. He does have a temper, slow to provoke, but exceptionally harsh when it comes out.
Appearance: Akai looks like a humanoid jackal, having tall ears and angular features, but he is completely hairless, his armored skin having a leathery texture. He is tail-less and in some respects seems more human-like than most recoms; his canine features being more an aesthetic choice on the part of his creators rather than a reflection of genetic heritage. He almost always is dressed conservatively, usually in a suit and tie.
