The large open cave made a perfect meeting place for a group of moderate size; it was one of many such alcoves in a series of caves, natural formations, in the Mountains on Adhara IV. These natural caves made a perfect natural fortress, the walls were lined with heavy mineral and metallic deposits which interfered with sensors and provided protection from all but the heaviest bombardment.
This particular alcove was set up as a conference or meeting room of sorts. Small portable tri-pod mounted lights lit the room in a dim and somewhat errie glow.
In the center was a large table, carved out of stone, around it were several chairs forged out of lightweight metal. Sitting on one side of the table was a group of hardened Talosians, many of mixed breed who wore mostly civilian clothing. On the other side of the table sat a number of military officers, all wearing uniforms of the Confederation and adorned with patches from the Hammerfall.
Near the exit to the room stood a half dozen Talosian guards donned in patchwork battlearmor, each armed with weapons ranging from primitive homemade percussion firearms to more modern looking Pulse and Plasma weaponry. Their watchful and suspicious eyes never wandered from the officers on the right side of the long stone table.
Edward glanced to the canine figures sitting both across from him and guarding the door. He then looked at the fellow officers next to him, who were mostly Humans with a few Recoms mixed in. He then looked down to the squadron patch on his flight suit and let out a soft sigh. It felt really awkward being on this side of the barging table, and he was hardly a diplomat. However, the CO of the Hammerfall had assigned him to the detail with the thought that having a fellow Talosian addressing the Renegades would ease tensions.
He glanced across the table. A few of the faces he recognized, many of whom he had previously worked odd jobs for around the desert wasteland that was Adhara. His former employers were now his new potential clients; saying it was an odd feeling was an understatement.
Nervously, he slid a data slate out of a pocket from his flight suit and took a stand. Reviewing a few notes, he cleared his throat and addressed the room:
“My fellow Talosians… The representatives of the crew of the Confederation carrier: Hammerfall would like to extend their support for your struggle against the Republic government on Adhara. We will provide your soldiers with both arms and equipment as well as provide military training to help form your Milita into a Regiment capable of overthrowing the local government and causing a revolution to mark Adhara as a free world….”
Numerous gasps, mumbling, and chatter between the represenitives on the other side of the table erupted, and the spaniel continued, shaking the dataslate that contained his notes nervously as he continued.
“Contained within this shipment of arms are 400 confederation assault rifles, 500 ballistic sidearms, 400 combat flak vests and enough ammunition to give each kit 20 full magazines for both the assault rifles and the sidearms. In addition, there are 15 light confederate issue field mortars, 1,200 frag grenades, 10 shoulder mounted guided missile launchers with 5 rockets each, and five fourteen inch field guns. This is only the first shipment; we have several more on the way by an independent courier that is able to slip the arms past the Talosian Authorities on Adhara…”
A tall labador mix across the otherside of the conference room dressed in a dust covered shirt and black tie stood and addressed Edward “We hardly can believe you would just give us these weapons out of “goodwill”. The Confederation is not known for their generosity any more then the Talosian Republic is! There has to be some sort of catch!” The room erupted in a number of scowls, barks and shouts as the Labrador sat back down.
Looking nervously to an aged Vulpine on his right, Edward took a solid gulp as he glanced back to the suspicious Talosians across the table “For that question, I am going to have to hand over the discussion to another represenetive… My briefing only covered the specifics and overall logistics of the offer, which was my initial presentation.” He then nods once to the Vulpine seated next to him, then back to the assembly “Major Kenoshi is an experienced and confident officer, who can testify more clearly our intent here…”
The spaniel pilot then took a huge sigh as he slowly sat back down in his chair. The debate heats up and questions fly back and forth between both sides over his head.
The pilot did the part, and that was to present the offer by a former member of the renegades. He may indeed have to field another question or two later, but for right now, the matter was in the hands of those more experienced with the fine art of Diplomacy…
